Court Usage Plans
Court Usage Plans
I have been reviewing the way tennis courts are used here at Arden since starting in my new role as General Manager and I do think we can get a better balance between the various sections of the club. The good news is that we have attracted a number of new members and they are enjoying playing tennis at our club. Which alongside our long serving senior members and a growing junior section means we need to adapt how we use the courts so all tennis players can get the best from being a member at Arden.
We have already communicated our new policy which in essence is a reminder of our existing protocols. So to recap.
• Sunday mornings are now designated a social doubles morning with no booking of courts up to 12.00, just turn up and play. If the courts are all busy, doubles takes precedence over singles. If there is a 4 waiting to play, the current players, either singles or doubles, should play a short set, tie break at 5 all, then leave the court and the doubles players rotate.
We should all be proud that our junior section is growing, and that Alex and his team are highly regarded by the players and their parents. There is also a solid program of adult coaching which have helped many members to begin or improve their tennis skills. There will always be pressure on court usage especially in the winter when the floodlights are needed by about 4.30 to 5.00. So a few changes which I hope you will support.
Club Nights Monday and Wednesday
Having the best 7 courts split around the club house isn’t ideal so we need to make the best of the facilities. So we will move Alex to courts 2 & 3 during the winter which means club night will take place on courts 10 to 13. Once coaching has finished at 7.30 courts 1-3 will also be available for club night. As always club night players take preference over all other matches so if a 4 are playing a match and people are waiting they should fit the waiting players into a club night scenario.
We also need to maximize court usage for all on a Saturday morning so we have allocated courts 2 & 3 as coaching courts up to 1.00. The coaches will also use courts 7 & 8, court 9 is currently not playable. This will leave courts 10-13, the birdcage and court 1 for bookable or just turn up and play tennis.
This was introduced last Saturday and whilst we should have communicated far better, for which I apologise, but we did have a number of parents making use of the bar and coffee shop which is a great improvement over our normal experience.
Saturday afternoons is also potentially a busy time with ladies’ team practice and Vets matches taking place. Going forward when Vets matches are booked in on a Saturday ladies team practice will be limited to 2 courts
There are going to be a number of changes in the operation of the club, which I understand will take some getting used to for some of our members but I believe they are well worth persevering with as I hope they will help balance the needs of the majority of all of our members and attract new playing and social members to the club.
