Matchpoint – December

Padel Tennis

The club planning application was unanimously approved in October 2019 by Solihull Council.

Some funding applications are still in progress, we have received some smaller pledges for donations and await the outcome of the larger grant applications which we hope to hear about in December.

The fund-raising committee is in dialogue with Sport England and the LTA following  the LTA’s formal recognition of Padel Tennis as a recognised sport and its decision to adopt Padel Tennis under its own banner.

Our intention is to install and launch Padel Tennis by late spring 2020 if we possibly can and we have now formally started the project planning stage.

Members can support this exciting project by obtaining a personalised pathway brick or taking advantage of a limited offer for a 10 year membership subscription for only £500!!

Please see details online and in bulletins or ask anyone on membership services, Michelle Moore or anyone on the Management Committee who will be happy to advise.

Tennis Club Night

A reminder to members about our club night etiquette (as there have been a few slips lately).

Club nights are Monday and Wednesday from 6.00 to 10.00, if people are still playing by then. They are really important part of our tennis offering and allow people who don’t have social 4’s arranged or are new to the club to have access to a turn up and play tennis in a friendly and welcoming environment.
On Wednesdays one of our coaches will facilitate. Its usually Seb who gets there just after 6.30 and will make sure that all members are involved and get a good nights tennis
Monday is self managing, but all members will be mixed into the night so they play as much tennis as they want to.
Club night takes precedence on the courts allocated and if you decide to play a social or league game and anyone is waiting at the end of a set you will be expected to mix in with anyone who is waiting.
The free club night floodlights are only for club night players only and if you are playing as social/league game you should pay for you lights as per normal.

British Junior Squash Open 2020

A reminder that we are again co-hosting the the British Junior Open from the 2nd to 6th January which will include most of the world’s top Junior players.  Members are more than welcome to come and watch play on the first 4 days.  We are hosting different age groups on each day. The finals are on 6th January at Birmingham University and Edgbaston Priory.

There will also be practice courts booked from Saturday 28th December until Thursday the 2nd when the tournament begins.

We still need volunteers to help with this event and if you are willing to help, please email Michelle Moore via the contact form on the website.

Squash & Racketball

Just one remaining home match for our 1st Squash Team before the Christmas and New Year break with them playing Kenilworth 1 on 2nd December, starting at 7.30pm. After 7 matches they are in 2nd position in Division 1 just 12 points behind Birmingham Uni 1.

The 2019 Racketball Club Championships and the Cappedell Squash Tournament are both close to the finals stage and results will be in next month’s Newsletter.

Friendly/Social Tennis Matches

In 2019 we enjoyed a very good programme of friendly matches against Knowle & Dorridge and Hampton in Arden clubs.

The format is mixed doubles. We mix players from both teams and play short sets.

They are very inclusive events and the simple idea is to enjoy the noble game of tennis.

Afterwards we share lunch and prizes. It is great fun – just ask Val MaCauley who won a bottle of wine as did Colin Gleadall at Knowle & Dorridge on the 19th November.

SMBC Local Development Plan Review – Update

i for information on a blue round button

The following statement  was received from Solihull MBC’s Head of Strategic Land & Property on 6th November 2019:
No further meeting has been arranged for Site 18 at the present time whilst we seek some commercial alignment with Oakmoor over what might form a commercially viable scheme for the site.

We are shortly expecting more detail on that and continue to work up the necessary pack to support the local plan examination. The Arden Club is of course adjoining but outside the proposed development area and so will of course be consulted further in due course.

We have no further information at this time on the timescale for the continuation of the local plan examination process bearing in mind that we are now dealing with the impending general election, but we are on track with the work that will be required for that purpose.

We will of course update you with progress as and when we hear more.

Maintenance update

We apologise for the recent problem with the steam room not working, we have now fixed this issue. We also incurred another problem this month with our boiler which impacted our hot water service for a period of 5-7 days, again, this has now been now repaired by John and the team.

Floodlights on tennis courts 1 and 2 were due to be replaced during the week of the 18th November, but unfortunately due to a supplier issue this will now be week commencing 2nd December. In the meantime, Tennis court 2 floodlights are not being charged for.

Unfortunately our lateral pull down machine in the gym has broken, should there be a high demand for this machine, we will look to replace this in 2020. In the meantime, we do have a lateral pull down cable machine which any of the Personal Trainers will be happy to show you.

Staffing update

The following staff will all be leaving us in the next few days. Please join me in sending our best wishes to Tom Rowley, Gaynor Keeley and Nick Hughes for their hard work and commitment over recent years at the club. We wish them all of the success in their future careers and endeavours.

Joining the club before the end of November will be Chantelle Davey, our new Deputy Manager. Chantelle will be overseeing the membership and bar areas of the club alongside myself.

We have also recruited a new Bar Supervisor, Darren Eustace who will be supporting Chantelle with the day to day operations of the bar.

Please join me in giving a warm Solihull Arden welcome to our new members of staff.
