Matchpoint – February
We need your help to make our vision come true
Padel is a fun game to play and appeals to a wide population. Children enjoy playing as it is easy to learn, promotes teamwork, whilst improving their hand-eye coordination.
It is a family game. Men and women and youth can compete together without physical strength being the sole determinate of the winner. The smaller court size brings everyone closer, making social conversation a much more integral part of the game. In short Padel is a great game for players of all ages and skills as it is both quick and easy to pick up and is less physically demanding than similar sports like squash. Most players get the grasp of the game within the first 20 minutes of playing and find it easy to achieve a level of proficiency so that they can enjoy it because the game is not as dominated by strength and serve as tennis.
Padel matches are very similar to tennis and with the same ball, but with a string less racket. It’s most commonly played in doubles, too. The court is ideally a rectangle 10m wide and 20m long, halved by a net and enclosed by 3m-high walls. Painted on are service lines. All serves are underarm, and must be played at or below waist level. Walls are part of the game, but other than that the scoring methods are the same as in tennis – including the denominations 15/0, 30/0 and so on. The ball can be hit as a volley, on the bounce or after hitting the wall. It can only be hit once before crossing the net again.
- Less physical effort is required than in tennis or racketball
- Longer rallies due to the small size of the court and fences
- More time playing and less time picking up ball
- 50mins of play per hour versus only 15mins of play for tennis!
- It’s a team sport, only played in doubles
- Having 4 people on a small court at the same time brings everyone closer, making social conversation between players an integral part of the game
- It is an entertaining sport to watch with spectacular points
- It is an intergenerational game, in which children, grandparents and parents can play all together

British Junior Open
The British Junior Open was a superb success and thank you to all who were involved in helping to organise the event, as well as all squash and racketball members for giving up courts to enable us to stage the event. As well as the great publicity for the Solihull Arden Club the event also brought in significant extra income, this year boosted by a number of national associations hiring courts prior to the event for practice and coaching.
Squash Club Championships
Solihull Arden Squash Club Championships are now open for entry but only until midnight on 3rd February and the competition will commence the following week after the draw has been made. Just go to MyCourts to enter.

We will be putting another temporary flatscreen TV in the far corner of the bar so you should be guaranteed a great view of the action.

“Arden Fast” Comedy Night ft. MC Woody Woodfield – 22nd February
You are invited to come along to an evening of comedy featuring 5 of the best local Comedians as well as our very own Woody Woodfield as compere. Last time we ran this event it was a sell out so don’t delay – grab your tickets today from the Bar.
Tickets are £10 from the Bar and all money raised will go to the Firefighters Charity.
Please note that this event is Adults only, Members are welcome to bring invited guests to this event.
For more details see posters around the club or speak to Tim Woodfield.
I regularly get members telling me they were unaware of events going on at the club – our advertising strategy is Posters on the walls around the club and on display boards on the tables in the bar, our Facebook feed and also via mine and Jane Howe’s Text and WhatsApp messages.
We try to balance our Text and WhatsApp messages so that we don’t “bombard” members as we know this can be intrusive so we will send a message about 1 month before the event then another 1 week before and another 1 day before – in theory you should not receive more than 3 messages per month unless something has changed relating to the event that we feel we need to inform you about (eg time change or cancellation).
If you would like to be on the Group Text then please Text me your name and mobile number (07855 400566 – to Nigel Busby) or if you would prefer to be on Jane Howe’s Arden Social WhatApp group please send a WhatsApp message to Jane Howe.
By doing this you will be in the know about Quiz Nights, Disco’s, Tribute Band Nights, Christmas & New Year Events and any other Social Nights throughout the year.
As always, please keep an eye out on Facebook and the posters in the Bar and around the Club for full details of these events as they come up.
Beer Policy (handpull Ales)
As you may be aware we have two handpull ale pumps within the Members bar and we regularly rotate the ales on offer to try and give Members a good variety of real ales in the bar. At the time of writing we have Black Sheep and Golden Glow on for example.
Our policy is to have one “robust” Ale (ie: over 4%) and one “session” Ale (ie 4% or less) available.
Running alongside this policy we also try to cater for the tastes of our customers who like IPAs or Dark Winter Ales or Wye Valley Ales.
In addition we have given an undertaking the Moolson Coors to stock a certain amount of their “house” Ales in return for them contributing significantly to our Sky Sports Subscription.
As you can appreciate it is very difficult to always fulfil all of these requirements but please rest assured I am aware of the wishes of members and we are trying our very best to give you a good choice of quality beers at the club.
To this end we have recently met with Silhill Brewery and taken delivery of a barrel of Silhill Gold Star which should be on the taps in early February.
I am always willing to listen to Member’s views on the Ales we have on sale so please feel free to email me at email@example.com if you have any suggestions.
If you have recently moved house or changed phone number or email address, please let Membership Services know so we can update your details on our system.
