Members are free to come down and watch some top-quality competitive squash from early morning to mid evening on each day. Access to courts will be restricted due to World Juniors practising (27th December – 1st January) and during the open. Apologies for any inconvenienced caused.
Any members wishing to volunteer to help our during the event please contact Robert Saffery.
Good Luck to all our juniors competing in the event.
Squash and Racketball
Looking back on 2018 for Squash and Racketball and January saw a very successful event with the British Junior Open. The 2019 event is again being co-hosted by Solihull Arden from 2nd to 5th January and viewing is free – come down and watch some world standard squash.
Congratulations to Luke Symes and Hassan Khalil for winning the 2019 Club Championships for Racketball and Squash respectively. Of course our Squash 1st Team won promotion to the 1st Division which was a massive achievement. To all members who competed both internally in club competitions, leagues and ladders, thank you for your support and to those who played for club teams or in external tournaments, well done for representing the club and keeping our profile in the Squash world so high.
County League Squash and Racketball
Mid-season break for Warwickshire County League squash and racketball.
Our Squash 1st Team are top of Division 1 with a 12 point lead over Sutton 1 and 21 points ahead of 3rd place Birmingham Uni 1. Their final match in 2018 in early December was an emphatic victory over Edgbaston Priory 1. See the full match report on our Facebook page.
The next home match is on 21st January against Four Oaks 1. Please come and support the team and see top quality Squash. You can check out the position of our other teams on the Warwickshire Squash League website.
Leagues and Ladders
A reminder about Squash and Racketball Leagues and Ladders which are available to join for all playing members, each one offering opportunities to meet and play other members, broaden everyone’s circle of people to play and make new friends. Full details are on your MyCourts booking system page with details of how to join:-
Junior Tennis Program
The new Junior Tennis Program starts on Monday 7th January. For further details please contact Natalie Hardy 07585793033 / firstname.lastname@example.org
Opt-in for Wimbledon
Apologies for boring you with this annual request but members did extremely well last year by a record number of ‘opt-ins’ resulting in the club being allocated 28 pairs of tickets to put into our own club ballot.
We are aiming for more this year so we ask that even if you do not anticipate going into our own ballot for tickets, that you PLEASE ‘opt-in’ now so as many members as possible can have the opportunity of going to Wimbledon.
Fond farewell to Claire Slater
Claire joined the Arden at the age of 8, in 1980 under the junior coaching programme of Mike Erskine, who was an amazing junior coach. Claire has played Squash and Tennis at regional level and then had the opportunity to play county tennis, if she were to quit Squash as it was beginning to affect her Tennis game (hence the dodgy slice). Mike advised, “One or the other…” and so Claire chose Tennis. Claire’s family then moved to Wales in 1986, at the peak of her junior standard.
At the age of 14 and having barely picked up a racquet in 4 years, Claire returned to the Arden in 1991 as an intermediate member, where she developed new friend groups and was allowed in the bar…DOOMED!
Over the years, Claire has enjoyed participating in club nights and re-introduced the ‘Peg Board’, represented the club by playing in the ladies team matches and played mixed team leagues until ultimately taking on the voluntary role as Tennis Chairman.
The icing on the cake for Claire was finally winning the Ladies Singles Club Championship this year, in a timely fashion before we embark on a new adventure together and start living in the sun.
Claire and Neil have had many happy memories and have made loads of friends and will never forget the Arden… 🙂
Good Luck to you both in the next chapter of your lives.
Fitness & Health
POUND uses the drumming in an effective way of working out. Instead of listening to music while exercising, you make the music in this exciting full-body workout. Combining cardio, conditioning and strength training with yoga and Pilates-inspired movements.
A little something for everyone, POUND is designed for all fitness levels. Perfect atmosphere for letting loose, getting energised, toning up and rockin’ out!
Join in on Wednesdays @ 7.30pm Members only £3.50 a session.
Rapid Weight Loss Course
On 8th of January the first rapid weight loss course of 2019 starts. The course is 3 weeks long and the sessions are Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30pm and Saturday at 8am.
Although it is a 3-week course and results are guaranteed, it is not a quick fix, but more of a kick start to learn how to keep your body lean and fit. (It is the third year the course has been running and the reason I keep it the same is because the results are that good!)
If you want to start the New Year with a bang and really make a change to your body this is perfect for you. Train with hard working, like minded people in a friendly and positive environment.
Places are limited, to book your spot please contact Ed on 07966448180.
Bar & Social News
As we head towards the end of 2018 and look forward to 2019 I would like to thank all of those members who have helped with the social events during the year. In particular I would like to thank Jane Howe who has helped me all year and also Mike “Dixie” Deane for the Cheese & Wine Tasting event & Colin McCauley and Keith Clarke for the Snail Racing.
I would also like to recognise the fantastic effort put in by Robert Saffery (& Rob’s wife Pam), Tom Rowley and all the bar staff and also Mandy Dale for helping with advertising and setting up rooms (& for her fantastic Christmas decorations in the Bar and Function Room this year).
What’s in the plan for 2019??
22nd February – Charity Comedy Night
You may remember we did a Charity Comedy night about 18 months ago which was a sell out success. Tim Woodfield has gathered a group of top local professional comedians to entertain us once again and put a smile on our faces in February.
Look out for posters around the club in the new year for full details of the line up but in the meantime put the date in your diary & tell your friends about it.
For the rest of 2019…
We have a packed programme of events to entertain you throughout the year including Peaky Blinder Night, Member’s Quiz & Nibbles nights, Vinyl Revival Disco’s, A Day at the Races, the Dave Cropper Memorial Tournament & BBQ, Dean McLeod’s Gala Cheese & Wine Extravaganza night and Colin & Keith’s Snail Racing Night.
As always, please keep an eye out on Facebook and the posters in the Bar and around the Club for full details of these events as they come up.
Member’s Big Birthdays
We have written out to a number of members who are celebrating a milestone birthday in 2019 but we don’t have everyone’s date of birth. If it’s your 30th/40th/50th/60th or even 70th in 2019 we would love to talk to you and host your birthday bash at the club. Whether you want to have a sophisticated afternoon tea with a few friends or you want to dance the night away until the early hours we can accommodate you. Don’t forget if you want to hold your event on Friday night then the Function room is free of charge to Members.
Please speak to Robert or Mandy about your requirements.
Member’s responsibilities during functions
Whilst we welcome children at Member’s private functions we would ask that the party host ensures that any children do not go onto the courts (as outdoor shoes mark the court floors), into the Sauna & Steam Room and particularly not into the Gym. Our Gym is unsupervised and can be a dangerous place for Children as there are heavy weights in there and equipment not designed for people of their size.
Members have paid for these facilities to be open until 10pm so please could parents ensure that their children are not playing in these areas during Private Functions.
Can I also remind Members & their guests that it is against the law for Bar Staff to sell alcohol to under 18s – even at Private Functions in a Private Member’s Club. Can I respectfully ask that Members do not put our bar staff in a difficult position or attempt to buy alcoholic drinks for minors.
Thank you to all of the members who come along and support the events throughout the year, all those that are badgered in the bar, on Facebook and via Text Messages….
A very Happy New Year to you all!!
