Internal Men’s League

the silhouette of a man playing tennis

There has been some demand to restart the men’s league and a number of people have already put their name down on the waiting list. If you want to join please write your name and partners name and mobile number on the score board by the changing rooms. This is a great way meet more people and play a bit of social competitive tennis so how about our new members and club night players joining in. The league will start in June.

Courts 14 & 15

As we have attracted a good number of new tennis members and we are all playing more now the weather is better we have been under a bit more pressure for court time. So we have invested in a deep clean of courts 14&15 and I have to say that the contractors have done a superb job and they look really good. We will be putting the courts onto the booking system next week and Alex will be re-planning the coaching program as the bottom courts are only playable in dry weather.

Dave Cropper Memorial

This year’s memorial for Dave will take place on 23rd June at 10.30am.

This is a social tournament for all club members in memory of our past club chairman who put a huge amount into our club. We will allocate partners based on ability so all standards are welcome and the more the better. We will play for about 2 hours and there will be a BBQ generously provided by Pat Cropper. So it’s a good chance to have some fun meet lots of club members and remember Dave. Please put your name on the notice board by reception.

Arden Club Tennis Championship

The 2019 club championships will start from 1st June and will run through to the finals day on 7th September.

So all new members of the club this is a chance to join in and play some competitive tennis. If you’re nervous just enter the handicap events where we will draw a partner for you and even up the ability levels with an appropriate handicap

Padel Update

a padel bat and two tennis balls on artificial grass

There is a lot of activity in progress keeping all members of the project team busy with trying to make sure all angles of the project are covered. Our planning application will be submitted in the next few days to Solihull MBC, this being an important stage to help us secure grants from potential funders. It should then take 6-8 weeks to process.

Also during May another very significant development took place in the world of Padel when the sport was officially recognised by the Lawn Tennis Association. They announced that they are going to integrate British Padel into their organisation and this is expected to provide a massive boost to Padel in the UK, as previously it was not officially recognised as a sport.

We are finalising details of the one-off 10 year Membership offer. Also we are working on concluding the scheme for member’s donations, hopefully using Gift Aid to bring in increased funds. This will provide the opportunity for members to have an engraved paving brick with their personal message laid on the patio next to the Padel Courts. An email informing members of the details of these two opportunities can hopefully be sent to members during early June. Please help us to reach our funding target by making your pledge to donate which can be made to membership services or any member of the management team, by email ideally.

Put Sunday 21st July in your Diaries folks!!

Following our Day at the Races event last year we are running another Day at the Races this year.

Look out on the Club’s Facebook page and on the Posters around the Club and Bar for more details.

This sold out last year and we had a waiting list – this year we are booking a bigger coach and looking at getting tickets closer to the action for an even better day out.

We had a lot of Members asking for more Quiz nights at the last Quiz so in addition to the one already planned in October we are running another Members & Guests Quiz Night on Friday August 16th.

Please come and support this night as we are putting this on following requests from our Members.

As always details will be posted on the Club’s Facebook page and on the Posters around the Club and Bar nearer the date.

Clarification on bringing own Food & Drink
Some of our events such as the Member’s Quiz night & Charity Comedy Night are “Bring Own Nibbles” events – we do this so that Members and their invited Guests can have an enjoyable evening and we can keep the ticket prices down.

Usually these events generate income for the club via drinks sold over the bar as the Ticket price normally just covers the price of the entertainment.

Our bar prices, considering we are a small independent club, are competitive with other similar venues in the area and we pride ourselves on the wide selection of beers, wines and spirits we offer our Members.
If Members or their invited Guests bring their own Drinks to these events then it will affect the Club’s finances and mean that we cannot afford to run Social Events in future as we have additional staffing costs for Social Events.

If any member would like to discuss this please contact:
Nigel Busby, Bar Chairman on 07855 400 566 or CONTACT US

a function room decorated in white and gold for christmas

You may have noticed that all of the windows in the Function Room have recently been replaced with new double glazed units.

The old windows and fire doors were badly in need of replacement and presented a Security Risk to the Club as the Fire Doors could not be properly closed.

We are planning to install Air Conditioning in the Function Room as the new Windows will mean that the room is much warmer than before.

As soon as we have the quotes in and our Treasurer gives the go-ahead then I will advise you of the details. It is also likely that we can feed Air Con into the Gym as it is above the function room anyway.

You may have noticed that all of the windows in the Function Room have recently been replaced with new double glazed units.

The club has been requested to attend a “Landowners Meeting” called by Solihull Council. This meeting will take place on 13th June and will be attended by representatives of the Management Committee.

The following extract from the Council’s request explains the purpose of the meeting:

“The Council would like to invite you to a meeting to review the collective aspirations of the landowners, this with a view to ensuring that there is consistent information being prepared for submission to the examination in public of the Plan, and robust evidence in place to deliver commercially viable schemes to support the allocation, especially where it involves the release of land from the Green Belt.

It is envisaged that key objectives for the landowners will be to establish detailed masterplans for the comprehensive delivery of each site allocation (including the necessary primary infrastructure), taking into account, and being informed by, relevant commercial considerations in addition to planning policy matters, including delivery strategy, financial viability, programme and phasing.

Following the approval of funding from the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) to support accelerated housing delivery on Draft Local Plan Review site allocations, we can also confirm that the Council has now appointed Cushman & Wakefield (C&W) as its planning consultants to promote the Council’s strategic objectives (in its capacity as a landowner) and make representations on behalf of the Council (in its capacity as a landowner), and we therefore look forward to introducing the C&W team.”

Needless to say we will update our members on the outcome of the meeting and in particular any matters that may have implications for the site as a whole.
