Matchpoint – November
Warwickshire County League squash and racketball is now well into the 2018/19 season.
Our 1st team won the first three matches taking them 7 points clear at the top of division 1.
In November they have home games on the 5th and 22nd against Birmingham Uni 1 and Leamington 1 respectively.
The final home match before the Christmas break is on 3rd December against Edgbaston Priory 1.
Do come and support them and enjoy some top quality squash.
Squash court upgrade work
This will be continuing in the coming months with the floor being replaced on Court 1. It was hoped to get this done before Christmas, but the current lead time for a new Junckers floor (which is made in Denmark) means that we are looking at late February next year to get this project completed.
In the meantime we hope to be able to repair some of the loose boards to prevent the frequent annoying uneven bounces. We will be trying to ensure funds continue to become available to carry out further upgrade work to Courts 1 to 5 over the next few years as at over 40 years old there is obviously some ‘wear and tear’.
Our objective is to maintain and where possible lift the standard of our facilities to remain the best in the South Midlands.
Also please note that the extractor fans on Courts 1 and 2 have now been replaced and are activated by the switches outside the doors to each court.
Our assistant squash coach is looking at ‘pastures new’ and is very likely to be leaving us in the near future. We have been aware for some time of Josh’s desire to relocate to North America to further his coaching career there and he is close to securing a new coaching role in Cincinnati.
It will be sad to lose him as Josh has done a fabulous job of supporting Chris in expanding and developing coaching in our Club as well as representing us in our Squash 1st Team, but we wish him all the very best for the future.
James Robinson is already running some of the junior coaching and if and when Josh leaves James will expand his activities to cover things.
Spaces available on half-term Junior Squash camps
They are being held week commencing 29th October.
There are still a few spaces left for the Intermediate camps on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd November. Call Chris on 07971 986926 for more details or to book.

Top Tip from Ed Hull – Personal Trainer
Here’s a top tip from Ed one of the personal trainers at Solihull Arden.
Next time you’re in the gym and you want a good way to burn fat at the end of your session, why not try out a tabata. This can be done with bodyweight exercises or on exercise machines, but my recommendation for the best and simplest way to do this is on the bike.
Simply pedal as fast you can with a tough level of resistance for 20 secs, when done drop the resistance to an easier one and pedal for 10 seconds. Repeat 8 times or for 4 minutes in total without stopping.
To give you more of an idea how this works here’s a demo video of my client Steve:
Give it a go and let me know how you get on and any questions, I’m happy to help!

Padel Tennis Update
As you may recall, following the disappointment of our Padel Tennis partner withdrawing in the summer, we have for the last few weeks been working hard to prepare a Funding Plan and Case for Support, together with a project time plan designed to raise the necessary funds to enable us to have Padel facilities in place for Summer 2019. In doing this it is clear that we have a considerable amount of work to do in engaging and persuading potential funding agencies and contributors in our efforts to raise the required sum of capital funding. Whilst inevitably the Management Committee will take the brunt of this effort additional support is always welcome. If any member feels that they are able, willing and have the enthusiasm and or skills to assist with any aspect of the fund raising task, we would be more than pleased to hear from you!! Needless to say if any member feels that they woud like to financially support or sponsor the project in any way regardless of how small or large, again we would be delighted to hear from you.
Please feel free to contact Robert Saffery our General Manager or any member of the Management Committee who would be please to hear from you.
Update from the General Manager
How quickly does a year pass? It seems no time at all since I was introducing myself to the club and its members.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and understanding for the changes that have been made over the last year.
The Management Committee and I set some tough challenges and targets to be achieved in the first year. The delivery of these targets was imperative if we were to compete against some strong sporting organisations in our catchment area. The improvement in the financial performance of the club was paramount to ensure its long term viability.
Better customer service delivery from both Membership Services and the bar, investment in staff training and better management cover through our peak operating times were also important to retaining and attracting new business. In a number of areas we have met those targets and again I must thank the staff who have supported me in delivering those aspirations.
For 7 months of the year, through the club’s normally quiet time, we have met the budgeted targets and the growth in business we stimulated has been illustrated in the clubs accounts. With the club’s function trade doubling compared to the previous year and our costs being better controlled we set a target to beat the tough budget we had set.
The aim we have set ourselves is to reduce last year’s large operating deficit and return the club to a healthy and positive position. At this point in time we have made very good progress on meeting our objective but despite this progress we could potentially find ourselves a small amount short of our minimum break even target. However, we have during this time made some major changes at the club which we believe should help us to make a surplus for the next financial year. We have made some tough decisions over the last 12 months to address our finances and provide a solid platform for the future to enable sustainable growth. But despite these changes we have still tackled a number of long and overdue issues and needs such as refurbishing the men’s changing room, installing anti traveller barriers, repairs and relining of the car park areas, new and fresh signage and a few other less noticeable changes for the better including improvements to energy management and improvements to internal processes.
We took some tough decision to restructure the current staff roles and responsibilities. This saw some new faces coming in and some existing staff leaving or taking up new roles. These decisions are never taken easily and I would like to thank everyone that has been here with me over the last year for their help, support and understanding in dealing with the changes and requirements to take this business forward.
I am sure everyone will take time to settle into their new roles and if they get the same support I received over the last year, we will continue to get stronger both financially and operationally.
I hope that you will continue to support the initiatives of your sections to grow membership, and participate in the new coaching and social program. Our aim must be to reduce the operating loss of this wonderful facility and see it move in to profit.
I would also ask you to please contact me if you are interested in advertising or sponsoring teams or individuals at the club. We are looking to foster long term relationships with businesses and organisations sympathetic to the long term goals of the Solihull Arden Club and its Vision ‘To be the best multi-sport facility for the Solihull community’.
