Summer Tennis Leagues

Despite a wet and Wintery start to the Summer League season, thanks to all the captains, all matches have now been completed, many of which had to be rearranged.

The following is a summary of how Solihull Arden Teams performed this Summer.

Men’s 1st team finished a very worthy second to Edgbaston Priory in the 1st division and should be congratulated on the high standard of performance they displayed in all matches.

In divisions 3 & 4 the men’s 2nd and 3rd teams respectively, finished mid-table in very competitive leagues. The 4th team, playing in division 7 also finished mid table. The 5th team had a hard time in division 9 finishing one above the bottom team.

In the Coventry league, our men’s 6th team had a successful season, looking for promotion by finishing in second place – well done!

The ladies 1st team, playing in highly competitive division 2, was unfortunately relegated to division 3, from which it is hoped they will bounce back next season.

Both ladies 2nd and 3rd teams played in division 4. The 2nd team narrowly missed out on promotion, finishing a very worthy 3rd whilst the the 3rd team fought hard to maintain their place in this division for next season.

Our 4th team narrowly missed out on promotion from division 6, having the same number of points as second placed Blossomfield, the outcome being decided on games won and lost – very well done to this team.

Playing in the Birmingham league for the first time and most players never having played team matches previously, the ladies 5th team finished an amazing 3rd in division 8 and should be congratulated for their enthusiasm and tenacity.

A massive “thank you’ to all team captains for all their efforts in ensuring teams are put out for matches.

Tennis Club Championships

The Club Championships are progressing well with most people playing their matches on time, thank you.

The finals day is Saturday 7th September and it will be well worth coming down to the club to watch as there will be some well matched games.

The full playing order will be publicised when we know who all the finalists are and we are looking to provide light snacks for players and observers.

Men’s Internal Tennis League

Man playing tennis

A while ago a few of you persuaded us to add a men’s double league to the internal box leagues. As yet there hasn’t been a match played so can someone take the initiative and arrange a match or two.

Once we get it started it will then spring to life and give another outlet for friendly competitive tennis.

The 200 Club

4 pound signs and the words 200 club on a white background with a circle drwan aound the edge

With the new Squash and Racketball season about to begin we are seeking as much support as possible for our Teams with as many members as possible joining the 200 Club.

This helps to fund our teams and the Elite coaching so please consider joining as with several draws in the season there is also money to be won..!!

Please speak to Membership Services to sign up.

Lighting on Squash Court 6

Due to recurring problems with the lights on Court 6, during September we plan to replace these with the similar fittings as on the other 5 courts in preparation for the Winter squash season.

In addition, a new loudspeaker will be fitted in the corridor behind Court 3 so that spectators watching play on that Court will be able to hear refereeing decisions and scores when watching team matches and club competitions.

Padel Update

The club planning application to Solihull Council is progressing and we hope to receive a decision in early September.

Some funding applications are still in progress, we have received some smaller pledges for donations but await the outcome of the larger grant applications which we hope to hear about in the next few weeks.

The fund-raising committee is in dialogue with Sport England and the LTA again following the LTA’s formal recognition of Padel Tennis as a recognised sport and its decision to adopt Padel Tennis under it’s own banner.

No further update since my report in last month’s newsletter other than to say that we expect to attend a further meeting to be called by SMBC which will be attended again by SMBC Planning Department and their appointed consultants Cushman & Wakefield (C&W), senior representatives of the Club’s Management Committee and Oakmoor.

This meeting follows on from the last meeting held on 13th June. We will of course update you with updates and progress.

In addition we will also be meeting with the Chairman of the local residents action group to provide an update on our current position.
